A cross-model audit or the editor’s ruling on one. Audit tables are themselves checked before anything in them is relied on.

R08 Post-Signoff Cross-Model Audit — 2026-09-02

First execution of the cross-model audit layer (pilot).

  • Target: R08 ledger v1.0 + synthesis v1.0 (signed off 2026-08-31)
  • Auditor: ChatGPT (10-claim blind citation audit, synthesis → ledger → primary source)
  • Reciprocal verifier: Claude Fable 5 (independent re-verification of the adverse finding, per two-check rule)
  • Author of audited report: Claude Fable 5 (editor) — auditor ≠ author, as required
  • Root-cause tags: verifier-induced + duplicate-source-identity

Auditor’s verdicts (ChatGPT)

Claim Verdict Note
C001 (AMF in cannabis) PASS Seemakram et al. identity + characterization correct
C004 (microbial biomass +15.1%, 107 datasets) PASS Geisseler & Scow exact
C006 (organic 19.6 vs 23.7 g; CBD 1,197 vs 1,319 mg) PASS Massuela et al. verbatim; concentration ≠ yield preserved
C008 (P: 30 mg/L / ~25% cannabinoid drop / 59 mg/L optimum) PASS Shiponi & Bernstein + Bevan disagreement correctly preserved
C013 (peat reuse × 3 strawberry crops) PASS Vandecasteele et al. faithful
C017 (Pythium/Globisporangium/Fusarium in coco/rockwool) PASS McGehee & Raudales direct hit
C018 (HpLVd seed transmission 58–80%) PASS WITH NOTE 12–42% range applies to growth/yield impacts broadly, not each metabolite
C019 (disinfectants fail in intact tissue) PASS Punja et al. matrix-dependent distinction correct
C021 (compost tea heterogeneous; sugars interfere) PASS Scheuerell & Mahaffee appropriately calibrated
C027 (media 25–38% of outdoor GWP) MATERIAL ISSUE See below

Score: 8 PASS · 1 PASS WITH NOTE · 1 MATERIAL ISSUE. No fabrications; all source identities held.

C027 — reciprocal verification: CONFIRMED (error tags: NUMERIC + WRONG_SOURCE)

Independent check (Claude, via web search summaries of Desaulniers Brousseau et al. 2024, ACS Agric. Sci. Technol. 4(7):690–699, DOI 10.1021/acsagscitech.4c00054; ACS full text returned 403 — verified via secondary full-text summaries, not the paywalled body itself):

  • Potting media contributed up to ~75% of GWP; GWP ranged 61.8 (high-N) to 110.7 (low-N) kg CO₂e/kg dry flower.
  • The small percentages belong to other impact categories: media ~50–60% of metal depletion (fresh-media scenarios), perlite alone 40–45% in two treatments. Consistent with the auditor’s finding that 25–38% is not a GWP figure.

Root cause (worse than the audit found):

  1. Gemini’s raw input (65–75% GWP) was correct.
  2. Verifier B (verification/R08-verify-B.md row 12) “corrected” it to 25–38% — the correction was the error (impact-category confusion).
  3. To reconcile the resulting contradiction with R05-C012 (~75%, source S-003), the same paper was registered twice in SOURCE_LIBRARY (S-132 = S-003, same DOI) with a “never merge” instruction — manufacturing a phantom second LCA and false corroboration.
  4. The error propagated: critique.md → correction-round-gemini.md (falsely debiting Gemini) → ledger C027 → synthesis → content-extraction R04 handoff.

Corrections applied 2026-09-02

  • ledger.md C027 — rewritten: single LCA, media up to ~75% of GWP; correction note inline
  • synthesis.md §Sustainability — two-LCA sentence replaced
  • knowledge-core/SOURCE_LIBRARY.md — S-132 retired as duplicate of S-003; claim-caution row reversed
  • content-extraction.md — R04 reconciliation task voided, recast as verifier-overcorrection case study
  • verification/R08-verify-B.md, critique.md, correction-round-gemini.md — append-only correction addenda (originals preserved)
  • Gemini’s R08 error tally reduced by one (item 6 of the correction round was a false positive)

C027’s directional conclusion is unchanged and slightly strengthened: media reuse is a major outdoor carbon lever and a minor indoor one.

Protocol notes (for standing adoption)

Agreed refinements from this pilot (ChatGPT + Claude convergent):

  1. Auditor ≠ author, always. 2. Precommitted selection rule (seed from report ID + date) published before source lookup. 3. Corpus-grounding proof: exact claim ID, synthesis sentence, and citation tuple quoted per item. 4. Verdict scale: PASS / PASS WITH NOTE / MINOR ISSUE / MATERIAL ISSUE / FAIL / UNVERIFIABLE. 5. Error tags on non-clean results: NUMERIC, MISQUOTE, WRONG_SOURCE, SCOPE, CAUSALITY, EVIDENCE_CLASS, ABSENCE_CLAIM, DOI/METADATA, CONTEXT. 6. Two-check rule: adverse findings require independent cross-model confirmation before any report is patched; the second model also rechecks 2–3 random PASSes. 7. Audits saved permanently under verification/audits/. 8. New, from this incident: verifier corrections that overturn a researcher’s number are themselves claims requiring a second check; SOURCE_LIBRARY must enforce DOI uniqueness at registration.

Pilot caveats: ChatGPT’s selection was not precommitted and its report did not quote exact synthesis/ledger text per item; Claude’s reciprocal check did not include the 2–3 PASS re-checks (C006 and C008 partially re-verified in passing via the auditor’s quoted figures). First fully protocol-compliant audit: next report, or a repeat pass on R08.
